I was crazy about baseball. My baseball glove was always close by: either under my desk or my chair at school. My biggest 36 was to play big-league baseball like my favorite star, Billy Hawkins.

My favorite 37 of the school day was the time when I could take out my glove and play catch. My teacher, Ms. Welles, told me to leave my glove at home, but I was 38 without my glove. During break, I stood around with sad eyes

and drooping shoulders, and in class I was always quiet. She also told me that I could do better in my studies if I concentrated on them. 39 was true.

One day, Ms. Welles introduced a special guest to the class—Billy Hawkins! I was 40 ! Billy said, “If you want to be a ball player, it?s important to study hard in school.”

“What does school have to do with baseball?” I asked.

“I?ll show you by giving you a baseball 41 .” said Billy, “Here?re three questions. Each student who answers all the three questions correctly will win two tickets to a Leopards game!” I was sure I could answer the questions. The first question was, “How do you 42 a player?s batting average (击球率) ?”. I wasn?t sure how to do the math on it. For the second question, Billy handed out an article about baseball. It 43 several words I didn?t understand. The third question was which team had won the World Champion when George Bush became President. 44 I knew about the World Champion winners, I didn?t know much about Presidents.

Nobody got all the three answers right. 45 , we would have another chance the following week.

That week, we all helped each other. The students who were good with numbers taught the others how to work out the averages. The 46 readers helped with the difficult words, and the best history students helped with important dates and names. When we took the second baseball

As usual, Betty was sitting alone during break. As she sat, she heard a quiet “meow” nearby and found a little cat with a band showing the name “Lucky”.

She picked up the cat and went to ask her teacher if she could help the cat find his home as a class project.

“Are you willing to organize this project?” Mrs. Smith asked. She had tried for months to get Betty to speak up in class, but Betty had stayed quiet. Maybe this was her chance to shine!

Betty thought for a moment and then said, “Okay, we need to put up signs around the neighborhood and call the local newspaper.”

Tony also suggested that they call the Animals? Home.

Soon students were busy drawing posters. Two students were making phone calls. Mrs. Smith was surprised to find Betty was so confident and really showed an ability to lead.

Betty, however, was not thinking about being a leader or being shy. Her mind was on finding this lost cat?s home.

The two students making phone calls came back and announced, “The Animals? Home said that

Ten minutes later, a woman showed up and said with joy, “Thank you for returning Lucky! He was very ?lucky? to have been found by such a caring group of students!”

A learning style is a way of learning. YOUR preferred learning style is the way in which YOU learn best. Three learning styles that are often discovered in students are Type 1 --- the Auditory Learning Style, Type 2 --- the Tactile Learning Style, and Type 3 --- the Visual Learning Style. Read about each of these learning styles to find out YOUR preferred learning style.

Type 1: Auditory Learners learn best when information is presented in an auditory language form. Does listening to audio tapes help you learn better? Do you seem to learn best in classes in which special importance is given to teacher lectures and class discussions? Do you find yourself reading aloud or talking things out to get a better understanding? If YES, you are probably an Auditory Learner.

Type 2: Tactile Learners learn best in hands-on learning settings in which they can physically control something in order to learn about it. Do you learn best when you can move about and handle things? Do you do well in classes in which there is a lab part? Do you learn better when you have a real object in your hands rather than a picture of the object or a spoken or written

description of it? If YES, you are probably a Tactile Learner.

Type 3: Visual Learners learn best when information is presented in a written language form or in another visual form such as pictures or maps. Do you do best in classes in which teachers do a lot of writing on the blackboard, provide clear handouts, and make wide use of an overhead projector(投影)? Do you try to remember information by creating pictures in your mind? Do you take detailed written notes from your textbooks and in class? If YES, you are probably a Visual Learner.

Your learning style is your strength. Go with it whenever you can. When you can choose a class, try to choose one that draws heaviest on your learning style. When you can choose a teacher, try to choose one whose teaching method best matches your learning style. When you choose a major and future career, keep your learning style firmly in mind.

55. If you are an Auditory Learner, you are probably interested in ______.

A. class discussions B. clear handouts C. written notes D. real objects

56. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Learners of Type 1 learn best when they listen more and talk less in class. B. Learners of Type 2 prefer written descriptions to real objects in their hands. C. Learners of Type 3 often create pictures with teachers in their minds in class. D. Learners of any type need to choose classes which match their learning styles. 57. By writing this passage, the writer wants to tell us that ______. A. learning styles help us to realize our future dreams

B. choosing the best learning style really helps us a lot C. achieving goals depends on our correct learning styles D. knowing about ourselves in learning styles is important

“When words fail, music speaks.” For every emotion we know, there seems to be a song that can express the feelings that go along with it. There are songs about sadness, joy, fear, anger and love. There are even songs without words, and even these tunes can have a powerful influence on a person.

Some may say music is the mixture of a tune, notes, rhythms (节奏), and maybe even words. But to me, I find that music is much more than that. Music lives and breathes everywhere—in the soft whisper of a summer wind, in the rolling of waves in an ocean, or even in the beating of a baby?s heart. Music is the rhythmic beating of life, and it gives life to everything.

People often go through life, taking no notice of the sweet sounds of music around them. They

walk through busy streets and pass people by without looking at anyone in the eye. People forget that simply saying “hello” to another person can be music. I have found, however, that by giving a small part of myself to others each day, I can be an instrument of love. I, too, can create music. Making time out of my day is a hard task to achieve, for I become busier and busier each day. But what I get from helping another person is endless, especially when I see how much I can add to another person?s happiness. This is a great and powerful gift that we have as human beings. We have the ability to take care of other people?s joy. By loving and caring for others, we can truly be instruments of love for other people.

Music is more than words put into a tune. It?s the flow of goodness and life that can be found in every situation, good or bad. It?s a helping hand when someone falls down. It?s a loving hug after not seeing each other for years. It?s a tear that falls down the cheek of a baby. That?s the thing about music—it is different for everyone. Music is there to help us when things are too great to put into words. Music will forever express emotions of love and life.

Music speaks louder than words. 58. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ______.

A. what music is

B. how music influences us

C. where music is D. why music influences us 59. From Paragraph 3, we know that people are often too busy to ______.

A. enjoy the happiness they have

B. listen to the music around them

C. notice the happiness everywhere D. create music by showing kindness

60. The underlined sentence “Music speaks louder than words.” shows that ______.

A. music gives life to everything besides words B. music expresses something beyond description C. music is different for everyone as well as words D. music is easier to be understood than description

Liu Xu was robbed (抢劫)! The 13-year-old was riding home when a man suddenly jumped out from the roadside. He pulled Liu off his bike and rode away. Liu was scared, but he didn't run after the robber. He found a telephone and called the police at 110.

“Safety is the priority (要务) in such a situation,” Liu said, remembering what his teacher had told him in his first aid class. “It is not safe to run after an adult who is much stronger than you.” Liu is a junior student at Shenzhen Bao'an Middle School in Guangdong. His school is one of the first in China to have compulsory (必修的) first aid education. Junior 1 students at the school must take the class once a week.

Teenage safety has become a serious problem recently. According to a 2004 survey, about 16,000 teenagers die in accidents in China every year. An average of 40 students die every day from drowning (溺水), food poisoning and traffic accidents.

Bao'an School said that the first aid classes are to “teach students skills so that they can protect and save themselves in emergencies.” Role-playing for safety

Students at Bao'an often learn by role-playing in first aid classes.

Zhou Min, 12, recalled(回忆) her favorite lesson. “I performed as a stranger knocking at a door. A classmate stood inside the door and asked several questions before letting me in. Then we changed roles and did it again,” Zhou said. “We learned a lot while having fun at role-playing.” The topics of the class are regularly updated. The students have learned skills for surviving (生存) in earthquakes. They also deal with topics like sexual harassment (性骚扰). “The teacher told us that we should try not to go out alone, especially at night. If someone tries to do bad things to us, we may hit their eyes or noses or kick their private parts. Then we should quickly run into a crowded place,” said Zhong Hua, a 13-year-old girl.
