Once there werenine fools. They crosseda river hand by hand. After crossingthe river, an old fool asked, “ Are we all here? Let me count, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Only eight!”
“ Who is missing? One of us issurelyin the river,” they cried.
They counted again and again, but there were only eight.
A passer-bysaw and asked them, “What’s wrong with you?” The fools told him about it. Then the
passer-byhelped them count again, “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. It is nine now.”After the passer-bywent away, they counted again, but there were only eight. So they criednear the river again.
