THE MAKE-BELIEVE INDIAN
George Delaney always wanted to be an Indian. As a young boy he taught himself to move about silent and unseen in the woods near his home in Sussex, England. His mind was full of thoughts of the Wild West.
As soon as he was old enough to leave home, George went to Canada. He stayed for a short time in Toronto. Then he went north. He soon met some Ojibwa Indians. They made a real woodsman of him. They taught him to handle a canoe. They taught him to hunt and to track.
George let his hair grow long. His face was browned by the sun and the wind. He wore moccasins on his feet. He began to think of himself as half Indian.
After a while George joined a band of Ojibwa. They gave him a new name: Wa-Sha-Quon-Asin, or Grey Owl. In time Grey Owl almost forgot his own language. He spoke and thought just like an Indian.
In 1925 Grey Owl married an Iroquois girl. Her name was Anahareo. She didn’t like him to trap and kill animals. One day Grey Owl and Anahareo were out in their canoe. Suddenly they heard a sad cry. They turned to see two beaver kittens. Grey Owl aimed his gun at them. But his wife clutched his arm. “Let us keep them,” she said.
Grey Owl and his wife took the kittens home. They tamed them. They gave them names: McGinnis and McGinty. Grey Owel vowed that from that time on he would never kill another beaver.
The couple lived near a lake with their beavers. Grey Owl began to write books about them. Later he adopted more beaver kittens. One of them was called Jelly Roll. This beaver became a film star. He appeared in some of the films about Grey Owl’s work with beavers.
The government offered to build Grey Owl a home in a national park. Beavers would be safe there. Grey Owl and others could study them in peace. Grey Owl moved his family to Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan. He was put in charge of a beaver reserve in the park.
By this time he was quite famous. He was asked to go to Britain to give talks on his work. The British were spellbound when they saw the tall man in full Indian dress. “ I am Wa-Sha-Quon-Asin, Grey Owl, a North American Indians,” he would say. “I come from far across the western ocean…” He went on to tell of his life of the Indians. He told about his fight to help save it.
At the end of every talk there was great applause. The papers were full of articles about him . thousands wrote to him.
Grey Owl went back to Canada. He spoke to people there. He asked them to help protect wildlife in Canada. His audience stood and cheered him.
Grey Owl died in April of 1938. Then the truth came out. Grey Owl was a fraud. He didn’t have a drop of Indian blood in him. Many people were angry. They felt cheated. But others stood up for him. True, he had pretended to be what he was not . But he had done good work. And in his knowledge and love of nature, Grey Owl could surely be called a true Indian.
