Rock and roll music developed in the United States in the early nineteen-fifties. It was based on the music called rhythm and blues that was performed by African American musicians. Early rock and roll singers developed their own kinds of music. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan were the most popular rock and roll musicians in the early 1960?s. All were American. Then, in 1964, a new rock and roll group from England invaded America: the Beatles.

Some people say the Beatles? music shook America like an earthquake. The Beatles changed rock and roll forever. Their early songs were influenced by American rock and roll musicians, including Chuck Berry. But the Beatles looked different and sounded different from any musical group be-fore them.

The Beatles released their first album in the United States in 1964, when all of the top five records in America were by the Beatles. In 1967, they released an album called “Sergeant Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” It was one of the first “concept” albums. That is, all the songs were linked by a common story or idea.

The popularity of the Beatles led the way for more rock and roll bands from England to become popular in America. The Rolling Stones was the most important of these bands. The Rolling Stones is one of the few groups from the 1960?s that is still performing and recording today. In 1965, the group recorded one of its most famous songs, “Satisfaction”.

The musical instrument most linked to rock and roll is the guitar. Experts say Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitar players in rock and roll during the late 1960?s. His “Purple Haze” was liked by many people.

By the 1970?s, rock and roll music became known as rock music. It expanded into many new forms. For example, there was country rock, hard rock, acid rock, and heavy metal rock. Punk rock, jazz rock, and glitter rock.

In the middle 1970?s, experts say rock music regained some of the energy of early rock and roll. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band became popular with their album “Born to Run”. Springsteen?s music was like the lively rock and roll music of the early nineteen-sixties. Many of his songs were about social issues. He sang about the effects of unemployment and the war in Vietnam.

A huge market is preparing itself for a new technical revolution — “e-paper”.

What if, tomorrow, with text shown on plastic-coated paper, we would turn the pages nearly with a click, and words and pictures would come to life? OK — tomorrow, it probably won?t happen, but why not the day after tomorrow? For Bruno Rives, founder of Tebaldo, a company connected in new technological trends (趋势) and usages, there is no doubt that “we are now in Year Zero of electronic paper.”

The idea appeared several decades ago. But it has now reached its “technological maturity (成熟)”, according to Jacques Angelé, director of technological programmes for Nemoptic, a French company which is in the lead of e-paper development. “This new paper weighs 150 to 200 grams, is 5mm thick, and 7 to 8 inches diagonal (对角线) . It must be simple to use and be always updated; after several unsuccessful attempts, the e-paper is now ready.”

“It?s a new opportunity for the press!” cheers Rives, who personally worked on this project. “It?s a chance to at-tract readers who don?t usually read the papers, and recon-quer those who have turned to the Internet. The money we will spend is not so big if we consider what?s involved (涉及)!”

As for us, we will have to get used to a new object. Though a page in black and white doesn?t shock us if we think of it like a pocket book, it may seem serious for other uses. Will it be long until it hits color or video, and will it be long before we get a foldable (可折叠的) electronic page? Maybe the technological attraction will make us forget the grainy texture of paper between our fingers. In fact, and even Rives agrees, it is not an easy task. He reminds us, “Paper did not explode in 321 BC, and we had to wait until the 1500s.”

72. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably means _______. A. it will take a year for us to have e-paper

B. it is the time when e-paper will be developed C. we have been in the time of e-paper

D. we are responsible for developing e-paper 73. It seems to Rives that _______.

A. attempts to develop e-paper will not be successful B. readers don?t like to read papers of e-paper C. it is a waste of time to develop e-paper

D. papers of e-paper will have a chance to win over the Internet 74. From the passage, we can learn that the e-paper looks like _______. A. a plastic coat B. a common newspaper C. a pocket book D. a note computer

6

75. From the last paragraph, we can infer that _______. A. the color on e-paper can?t last long B. e-paper still can?t be folded
