What Money Can Not Buy

With money you can have everything? --- No, that is not true. You can buy food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; soft beds, but not good sleep; knowledge but not wisdom; marriage, but not love; fun, but not pleasure; acquaintances(熟人), but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; quiet days, but not peace. Money may be the husk(壳) of many things, but not the kernel(核).

Friend

A friend is not just someone to whom you say “Hello”. A friend is a tender shoulder on which you can softly cry. A friend is a well into which you can pour all your troubles down. A friend is a hand which pulls you up from darkness and despair when all your other “so-called friends” have helped to put you there. A true friend is an ally(同盟) who can’t be moved or bought, a voice which keeps your name alive when others have forgot. But most of all, a friend is a heart, a strong and sturdy(坚固的) wall, for from the hearts of friends there comes the greatest love of all!

Failure Opens New Doors

Some believe that everything happens for a reason, and failure is no exception. Maybe you interviewed for a job and didn’t get it, yet another one comes through that pays more and offers room for growth. Perhaps someone you’ve been dating suddenly breaks things off, and you meet someone ten times more wonderful. Failure is never the end of the road, but only the beginning of something potentially better.

Don’t view failure as bad luck; instead, look at each attempt to reach your goals as a triumph. There’s always something to learn, ways to grow, different viewpoints to explore, and new opportunities waiting just around the corner. Choice

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch(时代), the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances(环境) of our upbringing(抚育). We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm(王国) of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice(怯懦), honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift(随波逐流). We decide what is important and what is trivial(琐碎的) in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. No one can cheat us out of ultimate success but ourselves.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod(土块) be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory(海角) were, as well as if a manor(领地) of your friend’s or of your own were; any man’s death diminishes(使减少) me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls(丧钟敲响); it tolls for you. ~ John Donne (1571-1631)约翰·多恩

The chess-board(棋盘) is the world; the pieces are the phenomena of the universe; the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just, and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a

I am closing my fifty-two years of military service. When I joined the army, even before the turn of the century, it was the fulfillment of all my boyish hopes and dreams. The world has turned over many times since I took the oath(誓词) on the plain at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the refrain(副歌,叠句) of one of the most popular barrack(兵营) ballads(民谣) of that day which proclaimed most proudly that old soldiers never die; they just fade away. And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. Good-bye. (麦克阿瑟国会告别演讲,April 19, 1951.)

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither(四处), in a wayward(反复无常的) course over a deep ocean of anguish(痛苦), reaching to the very verge of despair. (by Bertrand Russell罗素)

However mean(卑微) your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun(躲避) it and call it hard names(谩骂). It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder(吹毛求疵的人) will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house(贫民院). The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house(救济院) as brightly as from the rich man's abode(寓所). The snow melts before its door as early in the spring. (by Henry David Thoreau梭罗)

I was half in love with her by the time we sat down. That's the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they're not much to look at, or even if they're sort of stupid, you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They can drive you crazy. They really can. (from The Catcher in the Rye 《麦田里的守望者》)
