Many people have high blood pressure (高血压) for years without knowing it. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke (中风), heart attack, or kidney failure (肾衰竭). The only way to tell if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure examined. According to recent reports, 25% of US adults have high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms (症状), nearly one-third of these people don’t even know they have it. This is why high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer”.
If you have high blood pressure, you should think about having a pet, such as a dog, or a cat. Some psychologists (心理学家) feel that having a pet can help lower

blood pressure. Doctors found that blood pressure continued to rise in patients without pets, even when they were treated to lower their blood pressure. The patients with pets also had a rise in blood pressure, but not as much as the patients without pets. Based on this study, researchers conclude that drugs do help lower blood pressure but having a pet is a better at helping to control blood pressure. No one is really sure why this is true.

My name is Mona and I am 17 years old. I was born in Lunenburg, which is in the northern part of Germany. Germany is divided into 16 different states with their own school systems. This is the place where I lived my whole life, until August 2009. That is when my exchange year in the United States started.
My first day in an American high school was very exciting. Everything was so new! I had my own locker; I met different people in different periods; each period lasts for 90 minutes instead of 45 minutes. It was also very hard to find my way through a school with 3,000 students, which was three times bigger than that in Germany. I did not know anybody, but every day I found it easier to meet new people and find real friends.
In my host family, I first did not really like to share a room with another exchange student from Yemen. I soon realized how much fun that was.
Right now I am just enjoying my time here, and absorbing as much culture and American life as I can.

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares(噩梦).
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly wipe out, the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing (释放) chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out. They are not sure to what degree people’s memories are affected.
The research has caused a great deal of argument(争议). Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
\want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,\\
But those who are against the research say that maybe the pills can change people’s memories and changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity (特质). They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
\make us who we are. I'm not sure we want to wipe those memories out, \Dresser, a medical ethicist.
