BEIJING (Caixin Online) — The death of four children in the southwestern province of Guizhou has highlighted the problems faced by the millions of China’s “left-behind children” — rural youngsters who remain at home while their parents go off to find work in big cities.

The four — three sisters and a brother, aged 5 to 13 — were found dead after drinking pesticide at their home in Cizhu Village, in the city of Bijie, on June 9. Villagers and officials said the children had lived alone for years because their father has migrated to find work in another province and their mother left home in 2013. State media reported that the 13-year-old boy left behind a letter apparently for his parents that said: “Thanks for your good intentions. I know you are good to me, but it is time for me to go. I swore I would not live beyond 15 years old, and death has been my dream for years.”

第五部分 书面表达

As is reported, four left-behind children in one family in Bijie committed suicide while their father migrated to work far away. This has raised great concern about left-behind children’s psychological problems.

Many factors contribute to this phenomenon. First, to earn a living far away from home, many parents leave their children at home, so the left-behind children can't enjoy their parents’ love and care as their peers do. Second, people around them are indifferent, who show them little care. Therefore, many left-behind children are suffering from various mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, deaths caused by drowning, poisoning, and traffic accidents. To help improve the situation, effective measures should be taken. Parents do show their love and care to their children. It’s also the government’s responsibility to help them.

As for me, left-behind children should be considerate. Learn to understand our parents, who try to provide us with better education and better lives. Also, when meeting trouble, it’s wise to turn to our teachers, relatives and friends. Besides, Try to be independent by looking after ourselves. But keep in mind that life is the most important.

听力材料录音原文: (Text 1)

M: Here are two packages for you from New York. Could you please sign your name here? W: Sure. Thanks. (Text 2)

W: Look how thin the mommy is—and she had a baby only six months old.

M: Yeah, my wife gets really depressed when she sees moms like that. She had our daughter two years ago and she still can't lose weight.

(Text 3)W: I wanted to go to Spain in August but it's so expensive.

M: Well, summer is peak season, so it's the most expensive time. Why not go later in the year? (Text 4)

W: I'm hungry. Shall we go for a bite to eat? M: Sounds good.

W: And then how about going to see the new film? M: It's wonderful. (Text 5)

W: Yesterday’s lecture was excellent, right?

M: The topic was interesting, but the lecture was much more difficult, and I couldn’t follow it completely. (Text 6)

W: Oh, no! Not again! This happens every day. M: What’s wrong?

W: Look at the mess, Jim! You have your supper and never do the washing-up afterwards. M: I don’t do the washing-up but I wash the car every week.

W: I don’t care about that. You never help me with the housework! M: That’s not true, darling. I prepare your meals, right?

W: Oh! So what? The kitchen’s always a mess afterwards. You cook meals and I do the rest every day.

M: Calm down. OK, I will do everything in our house from next weekend. (Text 7)

M: I'd like to rent a bike for a day. How much does it cost?

W: It's 20 dollars a day. A day is from 9:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening. M: So, if I brought the bike back at 7:30, would I have to pay for an extra day?

W: Yes, and there's a deposit to pay as well. It's 50 dollars. Then when you bring the bike back, we'll give you back the 50 dollars. But if you didn't bring the bike back before 7:00 pm, we'd keep the money, of course.

M: Well, you don't need to worry. I'll surely bring the bike back at 5:00. Do you have helmets, by the way?

W: Of course. It's free to rent a helmet. Let's go and choose a bike and a helmet for you. (Text 8)

M: Hi, Tracy. You’re getting ready for tomorrow’s lessons, aren’t you?

W: Oh, yes, but I’m a bit nervous. I don’t know what will happen in class or how I’ll get along with my new classmates…
