Jules Verne was born in 1828. He was neither an inventor nor a scientist, but he read many books about science and wrote some exciting stories about the things which he thought that scientists and inventors would one day be able to do. Years later many of the things he wrote about really happened. At that time, his stories seemed like fairy tales. His most famous book is “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” (A “league” is an old word which means about three miles). In those days submarines (a submarine = an underwater boat) had not been invented, but he wrote about an underwater ship very much like a modern submarine. The men of the submarine in this book had many strange journeys and found many strange things. The people in Verne’s books often did surprising and sometimes impossible things, but they always seemed to be real people. In “Around the World in Eighty Days”, Mr. Fogg planned to travel around the world in eighty days. This may seem easy to you today, but in those days there were neither planes nor cars. Mr. Fogg traveled in many different ways, even on an elephant at one time! If you want to know whether Mr. Fogg succeeded, you should read the book. 41. Jules Verne was a great inventor and writer. 42. Jules Verne invented the submarines in those days. 43. Some of the things in Jules Verne’s books have come true today. 44.Mr. Fogg traveled around the world by car in eighty days. 45. Around the World in Eighty Days is an interesting book.

A proverb is a short, well known saying that expresses a common truth or belief.

We did a survey about asking our listeners to send us their favorite proverbs. A short time later, we received suggestions from around the world. We heard from listeners in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The top proverb among these listeners is this one: \Where there is a will, there is a way.\above your problems if you have a goal and work very hard. Some listeners liked another proverb: \God helps those who help themselves.\

Xu Da-ju from China wrote that his country has thousands of proverbs. Several of them are also used in the United States. One example is \Birds of a feather flock together.\become friends or spend time together.

Another proverb is \Blood is thicker than water.\Alina from China sent us this proverb: \He who would climb a ladder must begin at the bottom.\advice when looking for a job. Didier Vermeulen of France sent us this one: \It does not matter the speed you go. The most important thing is to never stop.\
