The author express her China complex and Chinese cultural consciousness through her writing.

12. compensate v.

Do take care of yourself. Nothing can compensate for the loss of one’s health. (vi. 弥补)

The insurance company will compensate you according to the policy for whatever losses you suffered. (vt.赔偿)

13. lease

He tried to persuade them to lease him their basement, but he was turned down. (vt.租借) According to the terms of the lease, the landlord is responsible for repairs (n. 租约)

14. pitch n.: the level or degree of activity or of sb’s emotion Disagreement reached such a pitch that a fight might break out .

15. loanvt.: lend

She was unwilling to loan her new book to her friends.

15. meantime ad.: also “in the meantime”

After graduation from college, I went on to pursue a master’s degree. In the meantime, all my friends found well-paid jobs.

1. sth., long a … of …, is being transformed into …, and … 用于形容“某物的变化”。

Exercises:

9.It is uncommon to see teenagers smoking today. Some of them smoke because of peer pressure. When they see some of their friends smoking, they feel the pressure to try it out in order to “fit in” with the crowd. Some other teenagers smoke because they want to imitate adults or appear to be mature. Teenagers like to imitate their favorite stars and adults around them. So, parents who smoke may set a bad example for their children. In conclusion, the causes of teenager smoking can be attributed to peer pressure and their intention to look like adults.
