Recently, a primary school in Xiangyang, Hubei province has added square dancing to their curriculum, which caused a heated discussion in our school. Students have different views on it.

70% of the students are in favor of it, holding that not only can square dancing help them relax themselves but also it can make them have a slim figure. What’s more, music dance combined with physical exercise is a good way for teenagers to get into shape. However, 30% of the students have the opposite opinion that square dancing is the dance of Dama, which requires less energy. Thus, it is not a good choice for them.

On a personal note, I have strong desire to learn square dancing with classmates in school, for traditional gymnastics is too boring to inspire the students’ enthusiasm for working out. In addition, students can learn to cooperate with each other. Maybe this would be a way to build the school spirit with an activity that many students enjoy.(151words)

Text 1

W: Hi, Tom, what are you doing here?

M: I’m waiting to buy a ticket to go home for Christmas.

I’ve been waiting for two hours, but it seems that I will have to wait for another two hours. Text 2

W: If Lisa doesn’t return my car in 15 minutes’ time, I’m afraid we’re going to be late for the baseball game.

M: Would you like me to get a taxi for you? Text 3

M: Jessie, would you like to have a cup of coffee with me?

W: I’d love to, but in fact, I’ve got to meet with the deadline of my paper tomorrow.

Text 4

M: I want to exercise, but never seem to find time. W: Why not do it first in the morning?

M: But I often get up at seven, have a quick breakfast, and then have to rush to the office by car. Text 5

W: What a memory I have! I did write down the number on a sheet of paper when I answered the phone this morning. But now the paper is missing.

M: Don’t worry. I’ll be seeing Mr. Brown in an hour.

Text 6

M: Uh, excuse me, Professor Muse? W: Oh, yes, Arnold, come in.

M: You asked to see me after class?

W: Yes, I did, Arnold. I just wanted to have a word with you about your performance in class lately. Your last three test scores have been very disappointing.

M: I know I have let you down. I will study much harder this semester.

W: Well, I’m glad to hear that, Arnold, because if you don’t improve, you will not be able to get a B or above for the final exam. Text 7

M: Mrs. Williams, I’d be grateful if you could just tell me a bit about yourself. Have you been swimming long?

W: No, not long at all. I started originally to get fit again after my youngest child was born. And I didn’t take it seriously at first; I only started practicing properly when I realized how much I was enjoying it.

M: So when did you start taking it seriously?

W: I suppose I started taking it seriously about three years ago. I joined the swimming club then, which really made me work at it.

M: And now, how often do you practice?

W: Every day. But I can’t go at a regular time, as I have to make arrangements for the children to be looked after.

M: And what does your husband think about it?

W: Oh, he thinks it’s wonderful, and he’s proud of me for getting onto the national team and winning prizes.

M: And how many prizes have you won?

W: Two so far. One was an individual medal and the other was a team cup. M: Well, Thank you very much, Mrs. Williams. Text 8

W: Hi, Tommy, got a minute?

M: Sure, come in. What’s on your mind?

W: Oh, it’s the plan for the students about the use of computers.

M: What’s the trouble?

W: The students are supposed to use the computers for only one hour a day because so many students need to use them every day. M: I can see that.

W: Well, now it seems that some of the students aren’t willing to give up their machines when the

hour is over.

M: I suppose they feel that it doesn’t matter very much to keep them a few minutes more. W: Yes, but this makes it hard for those who are waiting to use the machines.

M: You are right. Let’s prepare a notice right now. Then we can pass it out tomorrow to clear up the problem. Text 9

W: Good morning, Sales and Marketing, may I help you?

M: Hello, I’m interested in the job you’ve advertised for a marketing assistant. W: Certainly, sir. Can I take your name? M: My name is Sam Blunt.

W: Well, Mr. Blunt, what would you like to know? M: First of all, about the duties.

W: Well, you have to carry out market research. You will mainly be responsible for collecting the information and writing reports.

M: Oh, sounds interesting. Will there be opportunities to travel? W: Not at first, but after you’ve been with the company for about six months, you’ll be expected to attend meetings in some branches in different cities.

M: OK, that’s fine, thank you. I’ve already sent my application form in, so I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

W: Thank you for your interest, Mr. Blunt, and if you have any more questions, please call me anytime.

M: I will. Thank you very much. Bye. W: Bye, Mr. Blunt. Text 10

W: Pleased to be here today. My name’s Joan, and I’d like to share with you something about my French learning. I still remember when I first started to learn the language I didn’t really have a problem with the pronunciation. I just had a hard time memorizing words. But I made a great effort and soon I was scoring ten out of ten in all of the tests. By the time I got to university, I could do some writing and translations without much difficulty, and I actually enjoyed learning the grammar rules. Then as part of my university course I had to go and live in France for a year. As soon as I arrived, I realized I didn’t know how to order the type of coffee I liked, and trying to find somewhere to live or stay was something difficult to deal with. I called people about information in the paper, but I had to keep putting the phone down because I couldn’t understand a word they were saying—they all spoke so quickly! I could see then that there’s no point in just knowing words if you can’t hold a conversation with a native speaker. The ability to speak freely is what helps you get a job, hold a conversation or just buy the things you need.
