Living near an airport may increase your chances of dying from stroke and heart disease, according to a study. It also found one fifth who are exposing to high levels of aircraft noise are more likely to need hospital treatment or die from such diseases.
Researchers say the noise may lead to a rise in blood pressure, or disturb people's sleep. The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, come together with controversy over expansion (扩建) of Heathrow and other airports to increase UK flight capacity(容量).
Scientists at Imperial College London and King's College London carried out a study looking into a population of 3.6 million living near Heathrow in west London. They compared data on aircraft noise with hospital admissions and death rates. The result showed the risks of life-threatening conditions were around 10 to 20 percent higher in areas with highest levels of aircraft noise than in areas with least noise.
Study leader Dr Anna Hansell, from Imperial College, said, \exact role that noise exposure may play in poor health is not well recognized.\
Senior author Professor Paul Elliott pointed out that poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise and physical conditions such as raised blood pressure and diabetes all have a bigger effect on heart disease than noise exposure.
However, Kevin McConway, professor of applied statistics at The Open University, said, “Within an area, these studies can't tell us whether people who are most affected by aircraft noise are most likely to get heart disease or have a stroke. Does a 600-year-old Chinese map prove that Christopher Columbus was not the first to explore the NewWorld?
Gavin Menzies says in his book Who Discovered America? that the settling of North America by non-native people is more complex than previous thought; he also points out in an interview with the Daily Mail that the traditional story of Columbus discovering the New World is just a fairy tale.
However, not everyone approves of the theory. Menzies has been described as a \伪)-historian\
Menzies says that the Chinese map, found in a bookstore and created in the 18th century, is regarded as the work of Chinese Admiral Zheng He and shows a detailed map of America dating back to 1418. That would place Zheng He's efforts 70 years ahead of Columbus. In fact, Menzies says Columbus used a copy of Zheng He's map to arrange his own voyage.
Zheng He is arguably the most famous explorer in Chinese history. Ordered by the emperor, he led Chinese ships on voyages of discovery that helped expand the knowledge of the world including the previous unknown areas in the Middle East and Africa. His influence over Asian culture was so strong that he is still considered a god in some parts of Indonesia.
In addition, in his book Menzies even insists that Chinese sailors were the first to cross the Pacific Ocean 40,000 years ago. He says there is DNA evidence to support his idea. The current belief is that people from what is now Asia crossed into North America via a land bridge from the Bering Strait.
Critics of Menzies point out that he holds no degrees or professional training as a historian. But the Daily Mail says he can no longer be called an \41. What's the passage mainly about?
