Unit 6 Close
The family is usually the most important source of psychological support for a cancer patient. Having a physician who is knowledgeable, 1 and compassionate is also invaluable.
Friends and organizations in the 2 provide the next level of support, and religious groups and clergy can offer solace 3 . Local self-help groups and 4 led groups for cancer patients help individuals to feel less alone and to share feelings with others.
Group therapy is not for everyone. Some people are 5 to share private feelings or are upset by 6 the problems of others. They may choose individual psychotherapy to deal with illness-related 7 . Others may prefer approaches such as relaxation exercises.
Learning these 8 can alleviate anxiety, insomnia and pain by reducing muscle tension and 9 a calm, contemplative emotional state.
In 10 stages of cancer, both physical 11 and psychological distress increase, 12 the emphasis of caregivers should shift from 13 treatments to comfort. At these stages of illness, the patient is in 14 greater need of psychological support.
Hard 15 it may be to believe, not all survivors of cancer view their experience in a negative 16 . Some have told me, “I know it sounds crazy, but I’m glad I had cancer. The experience changed my life 17 the better.” 18 with serious illness leads some people to grow emotionally and thus to attempt to 19 long-standing problems or to 20 areas of life that they had never had time for previously.
