Ernest Hemingway influenced 20th-century literature so much,matched by few other writers. Given his continuing importance,it might come as a surprise to learn that 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of his death. To remember the day,Firefly Books published Hemingway: A Life in Picture,written by Heminway scholar Boris Vejdovsky with photos from the auther’s granddaughter,actress and writer Mariel Heminway.
As the title suggested,the main draw of the book comes from more than 350 family photos(mainly black and white),many of which have never been published. There’re interesting and inspiring pictures of the author from every stage of his life,starting with photos of him as a child dressed in girl’s clothing,moving on through his time as a wounded yong solider in WWI, stopping to explore his five years in Paris, and finally,settling on the older,white-beared “Papa” that most of us probably picture when we hear “Ernest Hemingway”.
As great as the pictures and documents are, the confusing structure of the book lets them down a bit. Instead of being set up straight through time,the book is broken into eight sections“ An American Childhood”,“Africa, the Last Frontier”,etc. The information in each section is presented chronnologically(按时间顺序地),however, each section only contains information linked to that section’s theme. The division sometimes causes problems.
Personally, I’ve never been a big Hemingway fan,however, the informative text and photos in this book succeeded in making me feel connected to the man. Learning about his domineering(专横的)mother,for example,helps me understand why he grew into the person he became. When I first visted Viareggio years ago, I was a bit confused to see a huge clown statue. It was explained to me that the clown is Burlamacco,the mascot of the Canival celebrations held in Viareggio every year.
During the visit to the Canival of Viareggio Foundation that year, I met the people behind the organization of the event,and talked with them about the history of Viareggio’s Canival and what it means to the people of Viareggio.
The Canival of Viareggio is one of the most important festivals in Italy and in Europe. It dates back to 1873 when a group of citizens decide to have a masked parade on Fat Tuesday to protest against to many taxes. Year after year the parade continued to grow in size and popularity.
In 1931 Uberto Bonetti designed the clown named Burlamacco as part of an advertisement for the event. Because of his immediate popularity,the clown quickly became the mascot of Viareggio’s Canival, and his statue can be found all year on the street. If you visit during Canival, you will see him everyehere. Burlamcco is always a popular costom choice.
Now I will tell you somethng about the Canival float(彩车). The people behind the floats are true artists. They often have elements of social and political commentary.the floats are surely amazing,with moving parts,performers,music and even dancers on the ground in front of the float. The best thing about the parade is that there are no barriers.
You don’t watch this parade—you join it. So put on your costum and fill your pockets with confetti(五彩纸屑).
