Unit 1

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month each year, which is a traditional festival in China. People in different places follow various customs, but all show their love and longing for a better life. Today people will enjoy the full moon and eat moon cakes on that day. The round moon is a symbol for completeness and family reunion. People selected August 15 to celebrate because it is a season when crops and fruits are all ripe and weather pleasant. On the Mid-Autumn Festival, all family members or friends meet outside, putting food on tables and looking up at the moon while talking about life. How splendid a moment it is!

Unit 2

While the Palace Museum and the Great Wall, the two world-famous scenic spots, are known to all a must tourist destination for people visiting Beijing, today, I’d like to introduce to you the Beijing World Park, the third major tourist site in Beijing. Completed in the early 1990s, the Beijing World Park boasts one of the new scenic spots in Beijing. Here the visitors may realize their dream of “touring around the world in a day”. Since its opening to visitors, the Beijing World Park has attracted many tourists from home and abroad with its splendid sights.

Unit 3

Peking opera or Beijing opera is a form of traditional Chinese theatre which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance, and acrobatics. It arose in the late 18th century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. The form was extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China. Major performance troupes are based in Beijing and Tianjin in the north, and Shanghai in the south. The art form is also preserved in Taiwan, where it is known as Guoju. It has also spread to other countries such as the United States and Japan.

Unit 4

Kites were invented by the Chinese people over 2000 years ago. About in the 12th century, Chinese kite spread to the West, and the oriental and Western kite culture was formed after years of development. In this process, Chinese traditional culture integrated with the kite craft, and finally formed the kite culture with unique characteristics. Uses of kite have been changed several times in history. According to historical record, kite was first used in military. Then, the use of kites was gradually changed from military to entertainment. With the innovation of papermaking, the raw material of kite changed from silk to paper.

Unit 5

Many people enjoy the city life since it is more exciting and convenient. Besides,

people in city have more opportunities to be educated and well-informed. In a city, one can always go to the new shows or latest movies. And city people can easily visit other parts of the world with modern transportation facilities. The country, however, has attraction of its own. People are close to nature and enjoys quiet and gentle pace of life. In addition, country people have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone who is ready to give a hand to those in trouble and danger.

Unit 6

Some of us always spend Sundays aimlessly. We can seldom derive profits from the valuable hours (time) of Sundays. This is indeed a great pity. Though Sundays are set aside as a day for rest, we must make good use of them. We know that our school lessons are usually not sufficient. We should often utilize Sundays to read reference books. In this way we will increase our knowledge. Besides, we must be engaged in sports or outing so as to strengthen our bodies.

Unit 7

What’s so impressive about robots playing children’s games? Common people may not think highly of such events. However, as for the scientists, this is monumental.

For a robot to actually find a place to hide and then hunt for its human playmate is a new level of human interaction. The machine must take clues from people and behave accordingly.

This is the beginning of a real robot revolution: giving robots some humanity. The places we will first see these robots are in the most human-oriented fields—those that require special care in dealing with the elderly, young and disabled.

Unit 8

Chinese intellectuals emigrate because they believe they cannot bring their talent into full play in the homeland. They often feel depressed and frustrated for a variety of reasons. The situation was so grim that once we suffered an acute shortage of talent as one batch of gifted people after another had gone abroad. It didn’t change much until the early 1990 when the efforts was made by the government to upgrade the status of the intellectuals socially and economically.

Unit 9

Sometimes it is interpersonal skills rather than professional skills that really count in a career. Interpersonal skills are nothing but the ability to be a good listener, to be sensitive toward others’ needs and to take criticism well. People with skills in social relations have the courage to admit their mistakes and take their share of blame which is a mature and responsible way to handle an error. That’s why many mediocre employees survive violent corporate upheavals while people of great talent are being laid off. Unit 10

In the West there are differences between table manners in various countries, although they are not so marked. In North America it is polite to cut up meat and then put the knife down, take the fork in the right hand and eat with it. Most European people, like the British, keep the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right all the time when they

are eating food that has to be cut. In the British Isles, special knives and forks are used for eating fish. In France, Belgium and Italy, however, it is correct to keep the same knife for every course, wiping it on a piece of bread.

Unit 1

Nowadays, with the improvement of living standards, people have taken up new ways to celebrate the New Year. No matter what change there might be, the highlights of the Spring Festival will remain the same: hoping for a propitious and happy new year. Dressed up in their best, people will get together, treat each other with the most delicious foods and exchange auspicious greetings. Most important of all, the Spring Festival is the occasion for a family reunion. People away from home for various reasons will always try their best to come back before the New Year’s Eve for the family reunion dinner, the most important meal of the year.

Unit 2

As a precious cultural heritage left by ancient people, rock-painting can be said as an encyclopedia recording the early social lives of human, which not only transmits the ancient civilization with long times, but also serves a witness of the culture, religion, folk-custom and ancient artistic history of prehistory people. China is one of the countries whose rock-carvings boast the earliest creation, the widest distribution and the richest content in the world, while Helan Mountain is one of the regions whose rock-carvings boast the most concentrated distribution, the widest theme and the best preserved condition in China.

Unit 3

Referring to Chinese tea, it can be traced back to the ancient times, and it was flourished in the Tang dynasty and the Song dynasty. We can say, the events of tea in other countries in the world, directly or indirectly, are basically spread out from China. China is the homeland of tea, and tea has become the national drink. In China, tea has a very long history, and has formed the Chinese tea culture. Meanwhile, tea is helpful to our body, so it is loved by many people.

Unit 4

In the Spring and Autumn Period, the State of Wu defeated the State of Yue, and took the King Gou Jian and his wife prisoner. For several years, Gou Jian laboured as salve in Wu. When he was released and returned to Yue, Gou Jian was determined to take revenge for losing his state. In order that he would never forget his humiliation, Gou Jian slept on a pie of brushwood and tasted gall before every meal. After ten years of careful preparations, he attacked and finally conquered the State of Wu. This story is called Sleeping on the Brushwood and Tasting the Gall. This idiom is used to encourage oneself to accomplish an ambition.

Unit 5

Traffic accidents are strongly associated with road conditions. Traffic accidents were on a rise in the last decade due to the increase of cars, buses, and trucks. Meanwhile the road conditions remained the same in the past ten years. Measures should be taken to solve the problem. First, bicycles should have special ways and pedestrians must walk on sidewalks. Second, the subway system has to be developed. And finally we hope that vehicles will be modernized and drivers better trained. Only when these measures are taken, traffic accidents are likely to be reduced.

Unit 6

Pollution is a problem because man in an increasingly populated and industrialized world is upsetting the environment in which he lives. Many scientists maintain that one of man’s greatest errors has been to equate growth with advancement. Now growth industries are being looked on with suspicion in case their side effects damage the environment and disrupt the relationship of different forms of life. The growing population makes increasing demands on the world’s fixed supply of air water and land. Unit 7

Human beings live in the realm of nature. They are not only dwellers in nature, but also transformers of it. With the development of society and its economy, people tend to become less dependent on nature directly, but indirectly their dependence grows. Human beings are connected with nature by “blood” ties. No one can live outside nature. However, the previous dynamic balance between man and nature has shown signs of breaking down. Problems such as the population explosion, ecological imbalance and the shortage of natural resources has become major factors keeping human society from being further developed.

Unit 8

To get a thorough understanding of oneself also requires doing oneself a favor when it’s needed. In time of anger, do yourself a favor by giving vent to it in a quiet place so that you won’t be hurt by its flames; in time of sadness, do yourself a favor by sharing it with your friends so as to change a gloomy mood into a cheerful one; in time of tiredness, do yourself a favor by getting a good sleep or taking some tonic. Show yourself loving concern about your health and daily life. Unless you know perfectly well when and how to do yourself a favor, you won’t be confident and ready enough to resist the attack of illness.

Unit 9

No one thinks of early rock and roll without thinking of Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll”. Elvis was an ordinary boy. He grew up poor, learned to song in church, and became a truck driver when he graduated from high school. No one thought that this young man with the guitar would change popular culture. He sang throughout the South, and teenagers went crazy over his amazing voice and his attractive performance. His music was a mixture of white country and black blues. With his long hair and tight pants, he became a teenage idol.

Unit 10

The 20th century may have been the age of scientific advancement, but in terms of world health, the progress has been surprisingly slow.

Despite growing life expectancy and economic growth, a billion people entered the 21st century without having a share in medical advances. Their lives are shortened or affected by disease. According to the World Health Organization’s latest report, heart disease snatched life away from 7 million people last year. It is the leading cause of death in the west and Southeast Asia. High income countries spend $55 billion annually on medical research, yet only a fraction of this is devoted to solving the problems of the poor.
