Pepe’s political consciousness developed between 1984, when she earned a B.F.A at Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and 1995, when she received an M.F.A from the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston .Though feminism was declining as a force in American culture, Pepe remained committed to women’s and gay rights. She made her first woven web in collaboration with Kady Van Duers and Diana Davies during Sonia Johson’s 1984 presidential campaign. However, her distinctive “merger of craft and postminimalism”can be traced further back to formative encoun-ters with Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, 1979, and Eva Hesse’s Hang Up, 1996.
