Then you will be happy to know the best fruit is blackberries. A yearbook is a tradition of high school life in the United States. The book contains the name, picture, and signature of each student in your final year. The high schools have a yearbook because it helps you remember who you went to school with. Fifteen-year-old New Jersey schoolgirl Catherine Cook and her brother David Cook, 16, wanted more than this. They thought: “We don’t really know our classmates from just a picture, so why not have a yearbook online? You could learn about people’s musical tastes, the movies they like, and so on.”
This is how they started a website for yearbook. Catherine thought of the name (myYearbook) and the logo (标志), with its two smiley faces. To advertise the website in school, Catherine and David wore T-shirts with the website logo on it to school. Soon hundreds of their schoolmates had registered (注册). She spent many evenings talking on the phone to programmers in India, and collecting ideas from her schoolmates. Then her older brother Geoff came up with the money to start up the website.
So, what can users do on the website? MyYearbook users can join in the fun by sending instant messages and “collecting” friends. They can connect with each other by watching the same films, sharing photos and even study guides. Some teenagers feel that they don’t fit in at school, but can make friends more easily online. Chatting online helps some shy people not to feel left out.
On the site, members can also get “Lunch Money”, a virtual currency (虚拟货币), by
completing activities on the site, or they can buy it with real money. They can then spend their Lunch Money on virtual gifts, or donate it to charities (慈善机构). Lunch Money donations have saved 0.3km2 of rainforest, cleaned up 1 million kg of co2, sent 22,000 books to Africa,
and bought 20,000 kg of rice for people without enough food. Running the website did not stop Catherine and David from completing their schoolwork successfully, and going on to university, where they still managed to put in 50 hours a week developing the site. 61. Why do American high schools have a yearbook?
62. What did the Cooks do to advertise their website in school? 63. Who came up with the money to start up the website? 64. How do users connect with each other on the website? 65. What can users do with “Lunch Money”?
