“A Demon or An Angel？— An Analysis of Nancy in Oliver Twist”
ABSTRACT
Charles Dickensis a critical realist in the 19th century; he pays special attention to describe the life encounter of “little guys” who live in the UK at the bottom of society, and deeply reflect the complicated social reality at the time. He has made outstanding contributions to the exploration and development of English critical realism literature.Although Oliver is the leading role of Oliver Twist, Nancy who was being a thief afterfour years oldis depicted as the most distinctive character, Nancy's role has a strong practical significance. The author uses a large number of words and dialogues to shape the contradictive personality of Nancy and truthfully reflects the poor children's miserable life in the capitalist society.In this paper,I willfirstly describe the history background of Britainand introduce the life experience of the author.For the second part,I will describe the Nancy's tragic fate to highlights the theme of the whole novel. Thirddissect the author's idealized realism, and then emphatically dissect Nancy's double characters by series of behaviors from analysis and the reasons of becoming such the character. At last, it looks forward to the human kind and bright future by analyzing Nancy's double characters. And Nancy's death not only criticizes the dark capitalist of society but also has a great practical significance for the developing and the construction of the modern society.

摘要
查尔斯?狄更斯19世纪英国批判现实主义小说家，特别注意描写生活在英国社会底层的“小人物”的生活遭遇，深刻地反映了当时英国复杂的社会现实, 为英国批判现实主义文学的开拓和发展做出了卓越的贡献。《雾都孤儿》中虽然主要以奥利弗为主角，但刻画得最具特色的人物却是南希，一个从小就被迫成为小偷的女性，她的角色有较强的现实意义。作者从大量的语言、对话描述来塑造这一人物的矛盾性格，真实地表现了资本主义社会穷苦儿童的悲惨生活。本文首先通过对当时英国的历史背景和作者的生平事迹来入手，以南希的悲惨命运为第二
部分，突出了小说整篇的主题思想。再从作者的理想化的现实主义着手，着重从南希的一系列行为分析她的双重性格，并且分析形成这种性格的原因。最后通过对南希的双重性格的分析来呼唤人类的善良本性及憧憬美好的未来，南希的死亡不仅是对黑暗资本主义社会的批判，对现代社会的发展和建设也有巨大的现实意义。
