读经典学翻译：《傲慢与偏见》系列01
《傲慢与偏见》内容简介：
小说讲述了Bennet一家五位千金的婚姻与爱情，表达了婚姻必须建立在爱情和经济两个基础上的婚姻观。傲慢而深情的达西先生成为小说塑造的一个经典形象。简奥斯丁的语言简练而幽默，反复品味，趣味无穷。
翻译例句：

翻译要点：
上面句子中entertain一词，大家通常了解的意思是“娱乐、招待、款待”，然而这个词还有另外一个常见的用法，就是表示“心怀、怀有、抱有(某种希望、想法等)”。我们可以说entertain a hope，或者entertain an idea。小说中的这个词可以就简单翻译成“很想、很希望”。
英译汉例句：
1.I wouldn't entertain any idea of quitting my current job.
我不会辞去现在的工作。
2.A few of us actually entertained the notion of auditioning for American Idol.
我们中间有几个人还考虑过参加美国偶像的海选。
汉译英应用：
知道了这个词的意思，就要会在汉英翻译中巧妙地用上它，类似于“想过/考虑过/希望/琢磨/心怀??”这样的句型，都是可以用到entertain这个词的。

翻译要点：
上面句子中的credit，意为“赞赏，荣耀，功劳”，do credit to sb.或者do sb. credit就意为“称赞，归功于”。这里的courses that were to do credit to her housekeeping，就是能让人对她的持家本领赞不绝口的美味菜肴。
英译汉例句：
1.She has tried her best. We should give her credit for that.

另外一个类似的句型是do justice to。do credit to是称赞的意思，而do justice to则是“不辜负，证明”的意思，比较一下：

翻译要点：
上面句子中有一个小词above，在这里的用法却非常巧妙。above his company，字面上是位居众人之上的意思，也就是说他高高在上，看不起身边的人;above being pleased，字面意思是不在能被讨好巴结的范围之内，也就是对别人的奉承不屑一顾。另外一个介词beyond，和这里的above有类似的用法，大家也经常用，例如beyond my ability：在我能力范围之外;beyond doubt：确凿无疑的
英译汉例句：
1.His conduct is above reproach .
他的所为无可指摘。
2.The light of heaven is above the brightness of the sun.
天堂之光比太阳还要夺目。
汉译英应用：
知道了这个词的意思，就要会在汉英翻译中巧妙地用上它，要表达“超过/胜过/不能够被??”这类意思的句子，可以省去比较复杂的动词，用这个小介词above来翻译。
例句：
1.没人能说服得了她。
She is above being persuaded.
2.要出人头地，先得埋头苦干。
You want to be above all others，work hard to earn it.
3.这是学校里最出类拔萃的孩子。
The student is above all his classmates at school.
4.恭维的话从来入不了他的耳朵。

大家有没有注意到原句中，above his company里company一词呢?这里company是“陪伴、陪同者”的意思，在汉英翻译中有很多地方也能灵活运用到，例如：
1.我一个人呆着就挺好。
I could very well enjoy my own company.
2.妈妈说不能结交坏朋友。
Mum has told me to keep away from bad company.
翻译例句：
Such amiable qualities must speak for themselves. (Chapter 3)
他(Mr.Bingley)的这些可爱之处显然令人对他大有好感。(第三章)
翻译要点：
上面句子中有一个很常见的词组，speak for oneself，用在这里似乎有些主谓语不搭，为什么quality，品质，可以自己为自己说话呢?其实这里的意思是具备良好品质的人，无需多言，其魅力就能自动给自己加分。这里speak for oneself其实完全没有speak的意思，反而意为“不言而喻”。
英译汉例句：
1.Let your behavior speak for itself. Don't mind what people say.
不要计较闲言闲语，用自己的行动说明一切。
2.What he did could well speak for itself: he betrayed us all!
看他做了什么就知道了：他背叛了我们!
汉译英应用：
知道了这个词的意思，就要会在汉英翻译中巧妙地用上它，要表达“不言而喻/昭然若揭/显而易见??”这类意思的句子，不要纠结这些四字格了，用speak for itself这个句型吧。
例句：
1.教授以自己的人格魅力，成为学生们拥戴的对象。
The professor's charisma must speak for itself. All the students love him.
2.这座塔气势宏伟，其壮观难以言表。
I can't say how majestic it is：The mere grandeur of the tower just speaks for itself.
