One and a half years ago, my friend and I separately received an invitation to our best friend’s wedding. Then we both decided to go to the nearby town to attend the wedding and come back together. After the reception was over, we were waiting for a public transport bus to go back home. It was nine o’clock at night, and although many buses passed, none stopped.

We waited for an hour and were getting desperate. We wouldn’t be able to stay overnight because it was weekday, and we both needed to work the next day. It was almost 10pm when a family who had attended the same wedding passed by in their car. Probably sensing that we were waiting for some means of transport, they stopped and gave us a lift.

I was so touched by their kindness, and I expressed my gratitude to them.

When we reached my hometown, the family dropped us at the nearest point from where we could catch a shared taxi to get back to the spot where we had parked our bike. On the way, a laborer stopped the taxi. The driver saw his clothes and asked him whether he had money to pay the fare.

The laborer shook his head and said, “No”. On hearing this, the driver refused to take him.

I remembered my own trouble a few minutes earlier, and I told the driver to allow him to sit with us, as I would pay his fare. What an immediate opportunity to pass on the family’s act of kindness! That night, I felt lightness in my heart, and I went to sleep happily and filled with joy about what I had gotten to do. How I wish this chain of kindness could continue all over the world with your help! That is why today I especially share my story with you!

A. By taking a taxi B. By walking

C. With the help of a laborer D. With the help of a family

22. The reason why the driver permitted the laborer to get in at last is that .

A. the driver showed mercy on the laborer B. the laborer finally agreed to pay his own fare C. the author promised to pay the laborer’s fare D. the driver dislikes to take another passenger 23. The author writes the passage mainly in order to . A. make such act of kindness spread in the world B. make people remember a moving story forever C. tell what shall people pay attention to in the wedding D. tell how people should deal with the strangers on the way

B

If you are like most middle schoolers, you probably don’t know what you’re doing this weekend, let alone(更不用说) where you might attend college in three or four years.

But Haley Berg, 15, can tell you exactly where she plans to be in the fall of 2017: starting her first year at the university of Texas on a full soccer scholarship(奖学金). For Haley, now a ninth-grader in Celina, Texas, the offers from college coaches started pouring in when she was in middle school. Haley is a really good soccer player who’s been playing the sport since she was four years old.

“The recruiting(招募) process started for me in the eighth grade,” she told The New York Times. “The college coaches were always there, watching our games.”

College are recruiting more younger players than ever before, and many of the student athletes are offered full scholarships before they’ve even set foot in high school.

This situation is especially evident in women’s sports. It may be a result of Title IX, a 1972 law that requires equal funding for men’s and women’s school sports. To comply with the law, some colleges have increased the number of women’s sports teams and scholarships they offer. That’s led to a growing number of college coaches who need more women athletes.

Some parents want their middle schoolers to win scholarships by going to college at an early age. But many people worry about the stress this puts on kids to make such big decisions. Even some college coaches have concerns about recruiting young players. Angela Kelly, Haley’s future coach at Texas, says she feels she has no choice; if she does’t recruit the young athletes, other schools will take the best players.

“It’s bad for the whole development of the sport, and to the girls,” Kelly said.
