I.Listening Comprehension Section A

Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.

1. W: Could you please have my car ready at 5 o’clock?

M: Sure, the damage is not serious.

Q: Where does the conversation probably take place?

2. M: Come into my office, please. I’d like you to type some letters.

W: Yes, sir. And I think I should remind you that you have a meeting in ten minutes. Q: What is the probable relationship between the two speakers?

3. M: When is the show supposed to start?

W: Don’t worry. It won’t start until 10 :30. We’ve still got 20 minutes. Q: What’s the time now?

4. W: Why were you late for the meeting this afternoon?

M: The road was blocked by traffic, so I had to wait. Q: Why was the man late?

5. M: I need to inform the post office of my change of address, and I don’t want my letters to

be delayed again.

W: I agree. You should let them know as soon as possible. Q: What will the man do next?

6. W: Bill, have you finished the research paper for biology?

M: Not yet, I always seem to put things off until the last minute. Q: What does the man mean?

7. W: Are you sure you’ve corrected all the typing mistakes?

M: I’d better read through the paper again. Q: What is the man going to do?

8. M: You look awful. Did you walk all the way from the bus stop in such weather?

W: Yes, but it didn’t rain when school was over, so I left my umbrella in the classroom. Q: Why does the woman look awful?

9.W: Look at this note from the landlord.

M: What? We can’t afford another twenty dollars a month. Q: What are the speakers talking about?

10. W: Is this school really as good as people say? M: It used to be even better. Q: How’s the school now?

Section B

Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the longer conversation. The passages and the longer conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.

Can dogs and cats live in prefect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about

adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along smoothly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn’t all sweetness. There was a reported coldness between the cats and dogs in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals agreement.

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.

What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases clean each other’s fur.

The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets --- to people who don’t get along well, including neighbors, colleagues at work and even countries. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.(Now listen again, please.) Questions :

11. Why do some cats and dogs fight ? 12. What is found amazing about cats and dogs? 13. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following speech.

Today, I would like to talk about the new concept of fitness. What exactly is fitness? How do you know whether you are fit? Under the Old Fitness, this question is answered by taking a few tests and comparing your performance to the “standard”. The New Fitness leaves every individual to arrive at his or her own answer, based on individual need, personal goals and different life styles.

The New Fitness definition is less precise but more flexible:you are fit if you can work effectively all at your normal task; if you have enough energy left at the day’s end to invest in leisure activities; and if you have the strength to deal with an unexpected physical emergency---running a block to catch a bus, for instance, or rearrange all your furniture.

By this definition, a healthy, physically fit accountant would not be in the same shape as a healthy, physically fit athlete. But there’s no need to be.

Fitness can be divided into three basic factors: endurance, strength and flexibility. Of the

three, endurance is the factor that is most often regarded as the key indicator of fitness. And the exercises which build endurance have the greatest effect on your overall health. The exercises which can provide you with training effect include jogging, swimming, bicycling, walking, rowing, rope-skipping, hiking, cross-country skiing and vigorous games of baseball, handball and soccer. (Now listen again, please.) Questions :

14. What do we know about the New Fitness?

15. How is the New Fitness compared with the Old Fitness? 16. What is the speech mainly about?

Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.

W: Now, please tell me something about the differences between American education and

education in many other countries.

M: In many countries, children have a lot of homework in the junior and high school. But in the

U. S. extracurricular activities such as sports, chorus, the student computer club, the military drill team, the student paper etc. --- all of them are important in high school. These activities give students valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and effective communication, which are very useful in their future work.

W: Good. Now why does the educational system in America attract so many foreigners?

M: Well, the U. S. system emphasizes individual choices. Many American high school students

decide to take difficult classes in subjects they are interested in. And if they want to continue their education, it’s easy to complete all the required courses and get enough credits to earn a bachelor’s degree. In many other countries it’s difficult to get into college, but once you’re there, you can coast along and not work too hard.

W: You’re right. American education begins to get very competitive in college.

M: And for foreign students, the huge amount of' high-level reading and writing that is expected

proves to be quite difficult. Most foreign students have never read enough English to develop a vocabulary equal to that of native speakers. Many students give up halfway because of their poor grades.

W: And why do some students get poor grades?

M: Poor grades can be due to medical problems, too many hours spent working a part-time job,

partying often, or simply not having the attitude and skills needed to perform well in a college classroom.

W: Thank you, Victor, for giving me so much information about the American education system. (Now listen again, please.) Questions:

17. Why is it important for students to take part in extracurricular activities? 18. Why is the American educational system so attractive to foreign students? 19. What problem do most foreign students have in American college?

20. Which of the following does not cause foreign students to get poor grades?
