Charlotte Bronte,an English writer,was a great critical realist in the 1 9th century.She wrote lots of works in her life.―Jane' Eyre‖was her masterpiece which has attracted rea ders of generation after generation.It was a world famous nove1.W hy did it get such success?Se.callse it vividly portrayed a female in an unfair soc iety who struggled continuously for freedom,independence and equality.
The heroine of the nove1.Jane Eyre lost her parents when she was only a baby and became an orp han. She was sent into Gateshead Hall,her uncle Reed s.However,her aun t,Mrs.Reed treated her cruelly after Mr.Read had died.Jane received lots of neglect and abuse.But Jane didn t surrender.After a series of sharp conflicts with the fam ilies,Jane left Gateshead Hall and came into Lowood school,an orphan scho1.Jane spent there for six years.At first, she was a student,then a teacher.Being tired of that dull life there,Jane left Lowood and was employed as a governess of Thornfield.At Thornfield,though Jan ewas humble and plain,but the mas ter of Thomfield,Mr.Rochester still loved her because of her inteligent speaking,independent attitude and courageous behavior.Jane also loved Roehester be cause he treated her equally.They planned to marry.On?the wedding day at the church,a stranger called Mason appeared.MrMas on declared the existence of an impe diment to the marriage.He said Rochester had already married. It was fifteen years ago that Rochester married Mason s sister. Ma$on s sister was mad and locked in a room of Thornfield.Now,Jane had no choice but to leave Thornfield.
Jane roam ed for two days and was accepted by St John Rivers and his sisters. (They were later proved to be Jane s cousins).Then Jane got inheritance from her Uncle John Eyre. She shared the inheritance with her cousins.Mr.St John decided to go to India as a missionary. . He asked Jane to go with him.
Jane refused St John s suggestion of ma~iage, because she knew what St John loved only was God, not her. Finally,she seemed to heat Rochester s cal1. she returned to Thornfield. But now, Thornfield was ru ined in a big fire. Rochester s ma d wife died and Mr. Roc hester was already blind in both eyes, with only one
arln left. In spite of Roc hester s disability,Jane married him. From then on,they lived a happy life.
The novel,―Jane Eyre‖, had a profound con otation. It successfully portrayed Jane,a rebelious fema le.In order to get dignity,freedom,independence and true love,Jane tried to preserve her self—respe ct, indepe ndence and self—sufficiency at each stage of her life. struggling witIl the social prejudice and oppression.With the development of Jane s rebelious spirit, the theme of the novel was revealed clearly.
At Gateshead Hall, Jane had the first conscious ness of the
unfair society, she began to realize the impo~ance of independence. At Mrs.Reed s.Jane was an orphan without any property and had to live wi th the help of others. Under this background, everyone loked down upon her. In the face of―John s violent tyrannies,John s sisters proud indiference, his mother s aversion and the servants partiality‖, ① Jane asked herself'?W hy 1
was always sufering, always browbeaten,always abused, for ever condemned‖.

voice bursted out from her dep heart.Jane had always yielded to John but this time. When John be at her again, with her head broken, she attacked him vicious ly. She shouted at him, ―wicked cruel boy! You are like a murder! you are like a
