Unit 1
VII 1.Learning strategies help me make the difficult task of studying English easier. For instance, it is beneficial to treat new words in different ways according to how frequently they occur in everyday use: active words you must practice over and over again; useful words you must commit to memory; words that seldom occur in everyday situations require just a nodding acquaintance. It also pays watch out for idiomatic ways of saying things in English. As idiomatic usage often causes difficulties for Chinese students, you must pay close attention to the way native speakers communicate. Language learning is, in fact, an active process. Students who make a conscious effort to practice English, who seek out opportunities to use what they have learned, are more successful than those who rely on the teacher to do the whole job. Undoubtedly, it is all important to put into practicethrough speaking and writing what you have absorbed form reading and listening.
VII 2.Many of you are studying English and you may be wondering why it is so difficult to learn. It is actually not that difficult to learn if you know some basic facts about the language and culture that it reflects. Perhaps the first thing you need to know about English is that it is made up of several other languages such asFrench, German, Latin, Greek and Anglo-Saxon. In addition, there are words from Spanish in English and many AmericanIndians words and names; even some Chinese and Japanese words have found their way into the English language. This borrowing of words from other languages is one of the key reasons for some of the difficulties that people meet with while they are learning English.

Forcing families to turn off their television set each evening may indeed be a way of bringing them together. Therefore, this proposal may well be a worthwhile one.
